Brandenburg Stud was founded in the late 1980s by Frank Dittmann, with its training centre based in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg. In 1998, the breeding operation was relocated to the KZN Midlands, and by the early 2000s Brandenburg Stud had become a household name in the equestrian market, the leading Warmblood stud in South Africa at the time.
In 2003, Dennis Robinson (the current owner) acquired part of the Brandenburg property, without yet realising that he would come to own the entire stud a decade later.
By 2007, the remainder of the farm and stud was sold, and over the next six years only minimal breeding activity took place. Both the land and the remaining horses were eventually dispersed.
In 2014, Dennis Robinson re-acquired several of the core stallions and mares, leading to the birth of a new generation of Brandenburg foals. It soon became clear that in order to gain lasting traction in the South African market, the breeding stock had to be modernised. This process began in 2013 and was reinforced through further acquisitions over the past few years.
Since then, Brandenburg has firmly established itself in KwaZulu-Natal, with a breeding base at Fort Nottingham and the training centre relocated from Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg under the guidance of Martin Minett in 2020.
Today, more than 90% of our horses carry Brandenburg’s own bloodlines.
Foundation & Bloodlines
Our foundation horses carry the blood of Nimmerdor, Landgraf, and Capitol—lines that shaped modern sport horse breeding worldwide. To these we have added leading sires such as Chacco-Blue, Diamant de Semilly, Cardento, Grand Slam, Carthago, and Kannan.
This combination of proven foundation and modern international genetics allows Brandenburg Stud to continually refine the balance between raw athleticism and exceptional temperament.
Our Philosophy
At Brandenburg, we believe the best sport horses are not only bred for power and scope, but also for trainability, character, and heart. Each new generation improves upon the last, and our aim remains constant:
To breed horses with world-class talent, combined with an outstanding temperament.
